In late 2020, a new hymnal supplement was published as a companion to Evangelical Lutheran Worship, the cranberry red hymnal now in wide use across the ELCA. This new resource, entitled All Creation Sings, contains 200 new hymns, new settings for Holy Communion, and other liturgical resources, including many that have been composed since the publication of Evangelical Lutheran Worship. Since many congregations and music leaders had their hands full at the time dealing with the COVID pandemic among other things, many of us simply haven’t had the chance to become more familiar with this resource and the depth of music, hymns, and liturgy it offers. From new texts set to familiar melodies and brand-new songs written for a variety of contexts, to hymns that fit within the church year and songs written for specific situations like events of mass violence, care for aging loved ones, and memory loss, All Creation Sings offers a unique collection of words and song for worship that is worth getting to know.
That’s why we’ll be hosting a workshop on the morning of Saturday, April 20 from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon at Community of Christ Lutheran Church in Whitehouse, Ohio, open to rostered leaders, church musicians, and anyone interested in exploring this resource. Thanks to the support of the Northwestern Ohio Synod Office and several musicians from around the synod, we’ll be offering a chance to get to know some of the music in All Creations Sings, from the easy and familiar to the new and challenging, with ideas for how to get the most out of this resource. Facilitators for the workshop will include Jacob Henry (Zoar), Kate Philabaum (St Paul’s), Eric Dickey (Community of Christ). And since much of the content of All Creation Sings is also available through SundaysAndSeasons.com, you can make use of its richness without necessarily having to buy a whole set of new additional hymnals, but can pick and choose what is useful for you and your context! Think of it as getting a chance to take this hymnal for a test-drive, with the help of some music leaders who can showcase its features.
Register by April 8. A pew edition copy of All Creation Sings is included with the $25.00 registration fee. We’ll offer light refreshments, coffee, and baked goods at the gathering time and conclude before noon. Community of Christ Lutheran Church is located at 6517 Finzel Road in Whitehouse.
