On the Way

I am going to send an angel in front of you, to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared” (Exodus 23:20)

When you spend time in God’s Word, you begin to notice that God and the people of God have a problem standing still and staying put. They are always on the go. Always on the move. Always on the way.

From those earliest days, when the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred, and your father’s house, to the land that I will show you.” And Abram goes. Later, God frees the Israelites from bondage in Egypt, and brings them to the Land of Promise. Later, the Assyrians and the Babylonians drag God’s people into Exile. But God leads them back, and eventually, God becomes one of us. God settles into the neighborhood.

But even as a child, Jesus is on the move. From Bethlehem to Egypt. From Egypt to Nazareth. And the child grows and becomes strong. Filled with wisdom, and the favor of God is upon Him. The child grows, but still He goes. From the River Jordan to the Sea of Galilee. From Galilee to Jerusalem. From Jerusalem to Golgotha. From Golgotha to the tomb. And you would have thought that the tomb would keep him still. But then on the 3rd day, Jesus is up and at it again.

On the go. On the move. On the way. You see, Jesus didn’t start a church. Jesus started a movement. And we are part of that “On the Way” movement.

  • “On the Way” is grounded in Scripture.
  • “On the Way” is what we are sent by Jesus to do.
  • “On the Way” invites us to join Jesus on the journey.
  • “On the Way” captures the full essence of our mission, to be the sent people of God.

Let us pray, “Oh Jesus, lead us to live your way, as together, we make our way, on the way”. Amen
